What Is? - Developmental Screenings

What is a developmental screening? A developmental screening is a series of questions and observations that will take a snapshot in time of the your child's ability to perform certain age-appropriate task and skills. Some of the skills that will be tested are: communication, gross motor, fine motor, problem solving, and personal-social. The screening tool we use at Resource Connection for Kids is the Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ). The ASQ is completed by the child's parent or caregiver and returned to Resource Connection for Kids. The ASQ's are then scored by the Developmental Screening Specialists to determine how each child is progressing developmentaly when compared to a standard set of developmental milestones.

The purpose of the Developmental Screening program is to:
  • To assist with child find efforts.
  • To screen children for possible development delays.
  • To educate and empower parents on child developnment.
  • To monitor the development of young children.
With the ASQs, children and their families will benefit by receiving periodic support, monitoring and referral to early intervention services at the earliest possible point in time, preventing some delays and reducing the progression of others.

The good news is that every child enrolled in child care in Manatee County is eligible for this free service. If your family is currently receiving financial assitance for child care then your child is already enrolled in this program. However if you are not enrolled and would like to, please ask your child care provider for an enrollment form or
